Where Will You Live?
Two of the biggest questions when thinking about retirement are When to retire, and where to live.
When to retire – on those days when your boss is driving you crazy or a client is being particularly difficult, do you start to daydream about retiring? If you do, what do you think about? Sitting on a beach with a drink with an umbrella in it? Playing with the grandkids? Travelling to those places on your bucket list? Starting your own business? Playing Pickleball? Taking weightlifting classes? Volunteering at that women’s shelter you have wanted to for so long?
Whatever comes to mind, open a file on your computer and start making notes.
When you think of retiring, do you know whether you can afford to? Or when you can afford to?
If you already have a financial planner, then it is time to talk to them, but perhaps you are not even sure what questions to ask or how to choose a financial professional to help you identify when you can in fact afford to retire. It could be that just a couple more years of work than you have been thinking can make a huge difference in your future outlook.
Although having your finances in order is a major step in planning your retirement, it is only the start.
There is much more to be considered, such as
What do you want to do when you retire?
Do you plan to do paid work when you retire? Do you have a specific kind of work you want to do? Do you want to start a business?
At least as important is knowing what you definitely do not want to do when you retire
With life expectancy now common to live into our 80’s 90’s and beyond, if you plan to retire at age 65, you could be looking at 30 more years to consider. That’s a nice long time to plan for.
Where to retire
With technology bringing us closer together, the world opens up to us. Many people thinking about retirement are considering where to live that is somewhere new. A different part of the country, or perhaps a different country all together. A house, an apartment, even living full time in a trailer and roaming around. There are many websites that will give you the 5, 10 or 20 best places to retire. There are many factors to consider: cost, lifestyle, weather, language, proximity to friends and family, ease of travel, etc.
